Good crysknife replicas are probably as scarce and rare as they are in the Dune universe, where the Harkonnens were willing to go as far as pay a million solari bounty for a single knife captured from the elusive Fremen.
There are at least three versions of the crysknife replica out there:
Original prop recast. Last year I came across an eBay seller who was selling what he alleged to be a crysknife prop he “found in Mexico” which he auctioned for a minimum of $100. I doubt it’s one of the originals but I believe that one is it is at least a recast. D48thronin has what he calls a “third generation prop recast” of an onscreen prop. It’s pretty rare to get one of these unless you know a collector who is willing to sell, or recast (fat chance!) their piece. Of all the crysknives it’s this type that I wanted to acquire since its the closest to what you see in the 1984 movie.
The Greyzon crysknife. You can call this knife authentic for the fact that it was based on an early production sketch for the movie, although the final design they used in the film turned out looking a bit different.
You see a lot of these on eBay going for around $30 apiece. When cast and painted properly it’s a good looking knife although you can see marked differences between that and the film knife. For example, the Greyzon knife doesn’t have a sliver of metal that serves as a knife guard and rather than have round blisters on the handle it has eye slits running across it.
I got my own Greyzon for $33, which wasn’t cast very well. Apparently there are a lot complaints about the recasts from Kingego and Reelart. Still, with proper editing, there’s a way to fix up these knives to make it look like bone.
Miniseries crysknife. Personally I only go after the 1984 crysknives for its ornate quality, but there are miniseries-type crysknives that readily available on eBay. Reelart sells these types as well.
The crysknife I’m working on aims to match what you see in the movie, however it is no recast of any prop replica out there. I worked with a lot of movie stills featuring the crysknife from the 1984 film, and came up with the wooden mould of a crysknife replica and sheath below which I’m casting in resin.
I’m also adding a bit of extras along the way, which I will write about as I go along.
